SF Sketchfest presents An Evening with Ann Magnuson: The Drawing Room Apocalypse

Because the Mayan calendar promises that the world shall end in late 2012, Ann Magnuson has decided to celebrate early. And, like Cher and Streisand before her, she shall begin the first of many 'farewell' tours to prepare for the aforementioned Apocalypse.
But because she wants to go out with neither a bang nor a whimper, she has chosen the route of Gentility, partly because of age but mostly because, in an increasingly vulgar world, it's the most radical thing to do. A mashing up of 'end of the world' songs, appropriately themed spoken word stories and bona-fide poetry will be presented as a contemporary twist on the "Victorian Drawing Room Entertainment".
With original songs by Ann Magnuson and Kristian Hoffman including material from the albums Pretty Songs & Ugly Stories, The Luv Show as well as golden nuggets from Ms. Magnuson’s former psycho-sexual-psychedelic alt-cult band, Bongwater.
Ms. Magnuson’s drawing room guests may also hear new variations on songs written by Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill, Bessie Smith, David Bowie, Skeeter Davis and the Doors (in a special Tribute to Occupy Oakland).
In keeping with Victorian Drawing Room tradition, Ms. Magnuson shall recite poetry both classical (by Percy Bysshe Shelley) and contemporary (by California's own bard, The Lizard King himself, Jim Morrison) and premiere a new original spoken word piece.
With musical director Mr. Kristian Hoffman on grande pianoforte and Mr. Joseph Berardi demonstrating a variety of exotic primitive percussive instruments from cultures occidental, oriental, and accidental.
Celebrate the beginning of the end in true Victorian style.

Event marks the one-year anniversary of the KUSF shutdown

Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of the secret three-way deal between media conglomerate Entercom and the University of Southern California, whereby the University of San Francisco entered into a contract to sell the KUSF 90.3 FM license to the detriment of the local community.
The sale was announced on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, when the station was abruptly shut down.
Join the protest in front of Entercom in the morning, and then attend the evening event with speakers, DJs, and who knows what else? Just be there.

A weekend of new German Cinema

Ringing in the New Year, German Gems returns to the Castro, San Francisco’s citadel of cinema, for a final celebration of new German films. The jam-packed day will start with a documentary about nuclear power plants in Germany, followed by a panel discussion with international speakers.
Several of the films on the program are by young, promising filmmakers: No Way Home, about two lost souls in their sixties who find each other and a new beginning; Above Us Only Sky is probing deep into the heart and mind of a young woman who is desperately trying to hold on to a broken life; and Westwind, last summer’s best German love story. The festival will close on a provocative note with Taboo – The Soul is a Stranger in Earth, a film about the forbidden love between poet Georg Trakl and his sister.

At any New Wave City event, you can expect a cool crowd of knowledgeable New Wave music fans from various ages and walks of life, who come together to dance, socialize and celebrate the music of their lives. Each event features a tribute to one of the seminal acts of the period, such as Depeche Mode, The Smiths, The Cure, New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. You'll hear songs from the featured artist throughout the evening as well as the rest of the best of New Wave. Visuals from Altered Images (AKA Skip) include vintage video, '80s movies and TV, slide shows with images of '80s icons, street posters and club flyers from 1979-1984, and original concert photos to round out the experience.
